Dentists, even if they are not periodontists, have to extract teeth as periodontitis progresses. When periodontitis progresses to severe, when it is time to move on to dental implants, or when a patient has dementia and is no longer able to take care of his or her teeth, the dentist is faced with the question of whether to save the tooth or extract it. Even with the same scale and grade, there are teeth to be preserved by regeneration therapy, and teeth that need to be removed and incorporated into a dental bridge.
The periodontitis index is used as a measure of progression in the discretion of the treating physician. However, the index also plays an important role in obtaining informed consent for the patient regarding treatment. In other words, it is necessary to have a clear and rational method of evaluating the progression of periodontitis that is acceptable to both the surgeon and the patient.
Perio Perio, a periodontitis evaluation application based on secondary occlusal trauma calculated from the relationship between bite force and periodontal ligament cross-section, has been launched as a measure of periodontitis progression and as an application that is easy for patients to understand. The app is now available in Japan and other countries around the world.
We will continue to work hard to improve the accuracy of our evaluation methods. We look forward to your continued patronage.
